May 31: Giants (29-25) @ Cardinals (35-18)

Jenifer Langosch/

Thursday night’s ninth-inning debacle prompted the Cardinals to make a roster move on Friday — Mitchell Boggs was sent back down to Triple-A; Keith Butler, summoned from Double-A, will take his spot in the ‘pen. Much more on the roster move and day-after reaction from a mid-morning finish in today’s notebook.

Manager Mike Matheny would not get into specifics about whether all his relievers would be available today, though he offered that his bullpen should be “fuller” than last night, when both Edward Mujica and Trevor Rosenthal were off limits.

Yes, Boggs needed to head back to the minors, but as soon as Blazek is able to come back up, he needs to replace Marte who should be DFA’d. Marte has no business being on a AAA roster let alone the senior club. I know Matheny feels awful about the late inning debacle those 2 created, but he would be panned even if Boggs got the job done. Running out the clowns of the pen in a 1 run game in the ninth proves Mike’s rookie moves still need fine tuning. I get that parts of our bullpen were unavailable, but throwing the mop-up guys into a tight spot like that can only lead to disaster. All the blame rests on our manager’s shoulders.
