June 1 (Game 1): Giants (29-25) @ Cardinals (35-18)

So, let’s try this series opener thing again.

With thunderstorms and tornado warnings leading to Friday night’s postponement, the Cardinals will be playing two at Busch Stadium today. This will be the fourth doubleheader to be played in ballpark history. It had been more than two years since a home game had last been postponed by the Cardinals.

Manager Mike Matheny has no interest in starting Yadier Molina in both games, so you’ll see him in the nightcap. That means Tony Cruz will catch Shelby Miller for the second time this season. Carlos Beltran and David Freese are also out of the lineup for game one.

Everyone in the bullpen is available to pitch today, as both Edward Mujica and Trevor Rosenthal were able to take the last two days off. Obviously, what happens in game one will affect the availability of each reliever for the second game.

The Cardinals have not yet determined what they plan to do about Wednesday, which was initially scheduled to be Miller’s next turn in the rotation. But with this start pushed back a day, he will not be going on Wednesday. The Cardinals have already depleted much of their starting pitching depth in the Minors. Adam Wainwright could start on three days rest, though that doesn’t seem the organization’s preferred route. I would guess the more likely option is to make it a bullpen game, where you could start by getting multiple innings from Joe Kelly. How much Kelly and co. have to throw over the next few days will bring some clarity to this.

Don’t expect Jake Westbrook to factor in as an option. He is slated to begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Springfield on Tuesday.
