June 28: Cardinals (48-30) @ Athletics (46-34)

Jenifer Langosch/MLB.com

Greetings from Oakland, where I am crossing another baseball park off my “have visited” list. Only two now remain — Target Field in Minnesota and storied Fenway Park in Boston. Pretty sad that after all these years of baseball travel I have yet to step inside Fenway Park. Hopefully, soon.

This is the Cardinals’ first visit to the O.co Coliseum since 2007 and just the second ever regular-season appearance here. Back in ’07, the Cards took 2-of-3 from the A’s during the visit. This also marks Matt Holliday’s first return to Oakland since the A’s dealt him to the Cards during the 2009 season. Holliday spent just a half a season playing for the A’s and brings a career .286 average at the Coliseum into the series. Against the A’s, Holliday is 12-for-25 with five homers and 10 RBIs.

The Cardinals enter the day tied with the Pirates — yes, those Pittsburgh Pirates — for the best record in baseball. Despite that distinction, the Cardinals have gone just 6-8 over their last 14 games. In the last 20, the club is 10-10.

And now that you’ve seen Oakland’s ball park you understand why you waited so long for it is truly a crap hole. But a crap hole I will be visiting tomorrow to see my Birds take on the A’s.
