June 29: Cardinals (48-31) @ A’s (47-34)

The Cardinals arrived at the ballpark this morning no longer owning the Majors best record or even the division lead. Both distinctions now go to the Pirates, who have won seven straight while the Cardinals have recently faded. St. Louis’ troubles have come during a stretch of games against American League clubs. Since going 3-1 against the Royals in May, the Cardinals are 1-5 against the AL West. Another five games remain before the Cardinals return to National League competition.

Adam Wainwright, who sits on 10 wins, will take the mound looking to snap a personal two-game losing streak. He has lost three straight in his career only three times previously. Also, after Joe Kelly’s extended relief effort on Friday, the Cardinals will return to a seven-man bullpen. But Kelly’s ability to get through the seventh last night saved the ‘pen from entering the weekend depleted. Consider that the minor victory to emerge from an otherwise forgettable game for the Cardinals.
