July 4: Cardinals (50-33) @ Angels (40-44)

Jenifer Langosch/MLB.com

Happy 4th of July, folks. Hope many of you will spend the day enjoying family, food and fireworks… and perhaps some evening baseball. The Cardinals have a chance to close this rollercoaster of a road trip with a series win — which would be the only one they’d get on the three-city swing. A series split in Houston and a series loss in Houston preceded this visit to Anaheim.

Adam Wainwright, fresh off being named the NL Pitcher of the Month for June, is seeking his 12th win. You can read more about that in today’s game preview (link here). Matt Holliday also returns to the lineup after two days off due to neck soreness.

Also, for those procrastinators out there, today is the final chance to cast votes for the MLB All-Star team. It looks like MLB.com is allowing 35 votes per person now; the link to the ballot can be found in this story. As of the last public tally, outfielder Carlos Beltran and catcher Yadier Molina were in line to start at their respective positions, though Molina’s lead over Buster Posey was thin. Matt Carpenter, who ranks third in the NL in batting average, was also creeping up in the second base competition.
