July 10: Astros (32-58) @ Cardinals (54-34)

We’ll start with news — and that’s that right-hander Chris Carpenter is scheduled to begin a Minor League rehab assignment in Springfield (Double-A) on Monday. If you’re down in the Springfield area, snatch up your tickets fast. They’re bound to be gone soon. The decision to send Carpenter to Springfield came after he threw three simulated innings at Busch Stadium on Wednesday. He faced Shane Robinson, Rob Johnson and Pete Kozma with dozens of eyes watching.

You can read Carpenter’s comments and other reaction in today’s cardinals.com notebook.

Also of note, the Cardinals announced that their rotation order coming out of the break will be as follows: Jake Westbrook, Lance Lynn, Adam Wainwright and Shelby Miller. The Cardinals will not use a fifth start until July 27, meaning that Joe Kelly will return to the bullpen as a long reliever for some time. This set up gives Wainwright some additional rest and provides Miller nearly two weeks off.

The Cardinals carry a four-game winning streak into the game tonight.

Manager Mike Matheny said that giving Yadier Molina the day off today was not the result of any setback with Molina’s knee. The Cardinals have been clear that they will be cautious with Molina, so expect a few days off for him leading into the All-Star break.

Where does this leave Carlos Martinez? It was discussed that he was down in the minors to get stretched out as a starting Pitcher for the big club.

We still need a shortstop.
