Cards option Butler to Triple-A

Jenifer Langosch/

While All-Star news will dominate the day, the Cardinals did make a roster move on Monday. The team announced via its Twitter account that it has optioned right-hander Keith Butler to Triple-A Memphis. No corresponding promotion was announced, though the move allows for the Cardinals to add someone else to the roster before play resumes on Friday.

Butler, 24, had been in the Cardinals’ bullpen since May 31. He made 12 appearances but pitched only twice since June 25. In all, the right-hander allowed three runs on five hits in 13 2/3 innings. He walked seven and struck out 11.

With Joe Kelly expected to move back to the bullpen for the first series after the All-Star break, the Cardinals will have the option of filling Butler’s roster spot with an extra pitcher or extra position player.

what are the trade possibilities for Jay/Holiday? both are hitting below the average mlb outfielders and are also a slight deficit in fielding vs the mlb averages?

Jon Jay is far better then he’s playing, but remember, they changed his swing and it’s not working. Having said that, Jon is playing himself into being a bench player. Oscar Taveras can play CF, with Craig going to RF and Adams taking over 1B. Now if they could only teach Kolten Wong the shortstop position, we’d be all set.

Holliday has a NO TRADE clause in his contract.

Holliday isn’t going anywhere. It’s too bad Craig can’t play center field.

Is Butler being sent down to open a spot for a trade acquisition? We’ll find out in the next couple days. Could it be Starter Matt Garza from the Cubs or Closer Casey Janssen from the Blue Jays???
