August 23: Braves (77-50) @ Cardinals (74-53)

Several items to note regarding the Cardinals’ roster situation. Here is a quick rundown of the news (check out tonight for more detail on each):

  • Jake Westbrook has been placed on the 15-day disabled list due to back stiffness. There seems to be no definitive timetable on how long the issue could sideline the veteran right-hander.
  • Tyler Lyons has been announced as Monday’s starter, in place of Westbrook. Lyons’ move to the rotation gives the Cardinals a lefty starter for their upcoming series against the Reds and Pirates.
  • Carlos Martinez has been called up from Triple-A to pitch out of the bullpen. With Lyons being unplugged from the reliever mix, the Cardinals needed to add the extra arm. Martinez was scheduled to pitch for Memphis tonight, so he is plenty fresh and can give the Cardinals multiple innings, if needed.
  • Edward Mujica said he felt “much better” playing catch on Friday, but that he would not be available to pitch in the game. That would seemingly leave Trevor Rosenthal to handle the closer duties.
