August 28: Reds (74-59) @ Cardinals (78-54)

Earlier today, the Cardinals again tweaked their roster — sending out Carlos Martinez and calling up Michael Blazek (story here). Manager Mike Matheny provided some context for that move, noting that Martinez is expected to start for Triple-A Memphis on Thursday so that he can stay built up as a starter. That would position Martinez and Tyler Lyons to be ready options for the Cardinals next Tuesday, when the club needs a fifth starter back. Both are still being considered for that start, Matheny said.

Lyons has joined Memphis, too, and will get a few innings of work while down there.

Connect the dots and this puts Joe Kelly in line to pitch Sunday in Pittsburgh. He’d be pitching on normal rest, and with Martinez/Lyons out of the picture and the club valuing Michael Wacha in the bullpen, there seems little other direction the Cardinals would go. Matheny would not confirm Kelly but also offered no alternative options.

Yadier Molina is out of the lineup today and when asked why, Matheny said that his catcher “needed a day.” By resting on Wednesday, Molina will get two full day off.

We still need a shortstop. AND is it me,or does Liriano’s head compared to his ears, look gigantic? Considering his big turn around from the years with the Twins one could think PEDs.I do, especially in the no media arena like Pitts.Even if the media knows they’ll shut-up like they did before in the 90′s.
We still need a shortstop!!

There is Liriano and then Fernandez and Miami that the Cards can’t seem to touch. Those two own us. Especially when we give them each and six pretty easy outs minumium, Kosma, Whoever’s pitching. That is now a glaring whole in the lineup. Last nite Kosma strikes twice, again. He is outmatched by every pitcher who takes the mound. Then he misses the bag on the double play.. yes, he got a pass later in the inning, but really. Missing the bag by inches? For me, Kosma is costing the Cardinals games now as he did early in the year. Maybe he will be and excellent AAA ball player, but now, today and for a team seeking playoff games he is an anchor weight. Let him go and improve his offense AND defense at Memphis. Oh and for out illustrious anchors please stop singing praises to Pete Kosma.

If the Cards dump Kozma, who do you propose they replace him with? Descalso? Ryan Jackson? It’s fairly easy to pick up a struggling reliever such as Axford, but what’s your answer for a new shortstop? And who do you trade? Some of the surplus pitching we supposedly had two months ago? You’ve identified a problem, but what’s your solution?
