Blazek recalled, Martinez optioned

Right-hander Michael Blazek will be joining the Cardinals’ bullpen on Wednesday, taking the roster spot of Carlos Martinez, who has been optioned to Triple-A.

Martinez will not be gone for long, though, as he’ll be eligible to rejoin the big-league team on Tuesday, the day after the Triple-A season ends. The Cardinals made a similar move a day earlier by optioning Tyler Lyons in order to help stock the bullpen.

With Martinez being sent out for six days, he no longer is in the mix to start for St. Louis on Sunday. That means the Cardinals are likely to give that game to Joe Kelly, who, because of Thursday’s off day, would still be pitching on normal five days’ rest. Adam Wainwright would then pitch Monday, and the Cardinals would plug Lyons or Martinez in to start Tuesday.

This will be Blazek’s fourth callup to the Majors this season. He has appeared in 10 games, striking out 10 and allowing 10 hits, nine walks and eight earned runs.
