September 1: Cardinals (78-57) @ Pirates (79-56)

Jenifer Langosch/

With the turn of the calendar month, the Cardinals have taken advantage of expanded rosters by adding speed (Adron Chambers) and an emergency catcher (Tony Cruz) to their bench. The team does not plan on making any other call-ups until Tuesday, when Tyler Lyons, Michael Wacha and Carlos Martinez will be added.

Chambers arrived in Pittsburgh on Saturday night so that he could be in uniform today. It’s the third straight year that Chambers has been a September addition. Cruz has still not been cleared to start swinging — he hopes to begin that on Wednesday or Thursday — but since he was eligible to come off the disabled list, there was no reason not to make the paper move. He’d be available to catch if the Cardinals get in a pickle. Otherwise, don’t expect to see him on the field this week.

Carlos Beltran came out of the game in the seventh last night and is not in today’s lineup due to what manager Mike Matheny labeled as lower back tightness. Sounds like Beltran lobbied for a chance to play today, which means he will be available off the bench.

Matheny said that he expects to announce Tuesday’s starter after the game today.
