Cardinals clinch postseason berth
The Cardinals will wrap up their season series against the Brewers later tonight, but they’ll take the field already knowing that they have locked up a postseason invitation. By virtue of the Nationals’ loss to Miami today, the Cardinals have secured no worse than the second Wild Card.
This will be the 10th time the Cardinals will play in the postseason since 2000. It’s also their third straight playoff berth — and it came much more easily than the previous two. The 2011 club didn’t clinch until the final day of the regular season. Last year, the celebration came after game no. 151.
The Cardinals planned to recognize this achievement in some way, but the celebration will be muted. The organization has much loftier goals, beginning with a division title. The club entered the day with a magic number of six to win the NL Central. That number will reduce to five if the Reds hold on to beat the Pirates this afternoon. If the Cardinals win later tonight, they could capture the division as early as Tuesday.
