September 29: Cubs (66-95) @ Cardinals (96-65)

The Cardinals can clinch home-field advantage through the NLCS with a win this afternoon or a loss by the Braves. Atlanta’s loss on Saturday night gave the Cardinals the edge in the win column by one. If the two teams were to finish with identical records, the Braves would be the league’s top seed because they won the season series, 4-3, over the Cardinals.

Atlanta’s game is scheduled to start at 12:35 pm CT, so the Cardinals will be able to follow it as their game is in progress.

As I wrote yesterday, the Cardinals are giving Jake Westbrook the start today as a way to acknowledge his contributions to this organization for the last 3 1/2 years. This decision has drawn a lot of disgust from the fan base it seems, but do know that the Cardinals have no intention of letting Westbrook stay on the mound for long. If he starts to struggle, he’ll be out quickly. Even if he does well, he’ll be out quickly. Aside from the first and, perhaps, second innings, this is Joe Kelly’s game.

David Freese is out of the lineup for a second straight day, but insists he is dealing with no physical issue. Matt Holliday is resting today, too, after getting his average to .300 with a home run yesterday. Matt Carpenter still sits one hit shy of 200.

I left a reply not going through I feel Beltran needs to be offered another year contract or 2 yr contract. He really wants to stay with the birds on bat. Replace Westbrook he not pulling his wt. Only as a sideline cheerleader.

Honestly, I respect the obligatory “start” for Westy, but glad to see Mike didn’t let him get past 1 inning. I was concerned about the perceived lack of care regarding home field advantage as I am much more comfortable NOT facing the Dodgers first round. It all worked out, but regarding the off-season, which I don’t even want to think about yet, my hope is that the Cards submit a qualifying offer to Beltran and he accepts. I don’t think we are better off if he denies, but 2 years is out of the question. OT should be ready by mid season and it at least buys them time in case of injury. With that said, what are your thoughts on taking on Tulo’s contract in a trade for Carlos Martinez and Matt Adams? Both would be huge for a rebuilding Colorado club, and we could throw in Pete Kozma as a filler…

It used to be Wild Card teams could not play against a division opponent in the first round of the play-offs. Was this changed when they created the second wild card team?

Would like to see them offer Beltran a contract for another year maybe 2? I think the glaring deficiency in the lineup is the SS position. I think Kozma and Descalso were both solid on D but the Hits and RBIs just didn’t seem to be there when we needed them.

Beltran a 1yr. deal only.Too many injury related issues.
We need a shortstop, and now we’ll compete with the Yankees because I feel Jeter will move to third with A-Roid out for awhile.
Cubs need a manager; Girardi? OR will the Reds go after him when the Bucs knock Dusty and the Reds out of the WC?
Jen, you posted about Westbrook’s start, but failed give your opinion as to whether or not you thought it was a good idea, why not?

Update on my previous post………..looks like A-Roid will fight his suspension. This will drag out 1 to 2 years, thus Jeter to third ain’t happening. That said,Jen what’s available in the SS market next year?
