Postseason shares announced
As the Cardinals were reminded again on Thursday, it pays to play deep into the postseason. Literally.
Major League Baseball announced the value of playoff shares for 2013 postseason participants. The Cardinals, who won the National League pennant, awarded 56 full shares to players and support staff at a value of $228,300.17 each. Players also voted to give out 9.798 partial shares and two cash awards.
How clubs opt to divide their pool of money is determined through a player vote. The Cardinals held a meeting during the postseason to make that decision.
The World Champion Red Sox received full shares worth $307,322.68. Another eight clubs – including the two that lost the Wild Card play-in game also received a payout. The pool of money distributed to teams is formed from 50 percent of gate receipts from the Wild Card games; 60 percent of gate receipts from the first three games of the Division Series; 60 percent of the gate receipts from the first four games of the League Championship Series; and 60 percent of the gate receipts from the first four World Series games. That totaled $62,683,966.80.
