Welcome to the Winter Meetings

Jenifer Langosch/MLB.com

Coming to you from Disney World, where dreams come true and (this week) deals are sure to be made. There was a frenzied week of trades and signings leading up to the Winter Meetings, but that doesn’t mean these next few days will be quiet.

For the Cardinals, though, there is not a lot left to do. They already filled their shortstop hole (Jhonny Peralta) and added a speedy, defensive outfielder (Peter Bourjos). A right-handed hitting infielder remains on the list of needs, but that could be the extent of the Cardinals’ winter activity. Teams are likely to ask the Cardinals about their plethora of young pitching, but the Cardinals can be super selective in considering such offers.

This week isn’t just about transactions, though. At 9 am CT today, the Hall of Fame Expansion Era committee will announce its 2014 Hall of Fame inductees. Tony La Russa is on the ballot for the first time and is a strong candidate to be voted into the Hall. He could go in alongside managers Bobby Cox and Joe Torre. Player inductions will be announced in January.

Manager Mike Matheny will meet with the media on Tuesday. General manager John Mozeliak will hold daily press gatherings. Stay plugged into cardinals.com (and this blog) for the latest from Lake Buena Vista.

why didn’t they keep Furcal as a utility infielder and bench strength?
