Feb. 12: Q of the Day

A reminder that I’ll be answering reader questions each day throughout Spring Training. If you would like to submit a question for consideration, email it to me (jenifer.langosch@mlb.com) and include your first name, last initial and hometown. Thanks. And happy reading.

I want to point out that my Q of the Day last spring called Matt Carpenter at lead off, and what an amazing difference that made. Who do you foresee getting more bench time: Matt Adams or Oscar Taveras?

— Bryan J., Indianapolis

Kudos on the Carpenter call last season. I’ll take your word for it without digging back into my archives for proof.

Anyways, onto another topic of discussion. While there is still a lot of fluidity with Taveras’ early-season placement, the Cardinals do not intend to keep him on the Major League roster in order to use him off the bench. If there is not a starting job ready for him, he will remain in Triple-A. Taveras, 21, is still early enough in the development process that it could be a deterrent to have him sitting and not playing. That’s especially the case when you consider all the time he lost to injury last season. Whatever the level may be, he needs to play.

That is my long-winded way of saying that Adams would likely land back on the Cardinals bench before Taveras. Perhaps Taveras will come up mid-season and push Allen Craig back to first and Adams to the bench. Or maybe Taveras will ascend as a center fielder, leaving Adams with an everyday spot. There are way too many moving pieces (and depth) to know for sure how this will all play out. But be sure that the Cardinals do not envision Taveras as a part-time player.
