Day 7: Bird Seed

wpid-0219141108a.jpgNow more than a week into workouts, the days are becoming somewhat the same down here. During my first year covering baseball, someone told me that in Spring Training, every day is a Tuesday. That is right on point. There is little distinction in the days down here. They all start at the same time, end around the same hour and feature a workout that lasts for 2-2.5 hours (depending upon what position you play). On Thursday, though, (if tomorrow really is Thursday), there will be a new wrinkle added in: live batting practice.

You can read more about those plans in the cardinals.com notebook. But for those of us who spend our days watching bunting, bullpen sessions and fielding drills, any new element is worth looking forward to.

Other news and notes from the day in Jupiter:

  • There were only six bullpen sessions thrown today — Tyler Lyons, Tim Cooney, Eric Fornataro, Lee Stoppelman, wpid-0219141102a.jpgAngel Castro, Marco Gonzales — as several pitchers stopped the every-other-day routine so that they could be ready for live BP tomorrow.
  • Kevin Siegrist has still not taken the mound since Saturday, but the Cardinals are adamant that this is no setback.
  • For those of you interested in the Minor League depth chart, consider how the Cardinals have split up their infielders. Over on the second field, Patrick Wisdom and Greg Garcia were getting work at third. Pete Kozma and Luis Mateo were planted at short. Scott Moore, who can play across the infield, was at second. And Xavier Scruggs handled first.

  • ESPN rolled up this morning with its oversized bus and portable studio. Several players, including Matt Carpenter, Allen Craig and Adam Wainwright, visited with the network, as did manager Mike Matheny.
  • The Cardinals expect a visit from Joe Torre and Tony La Russa on Thursday to hear more about the implementation of instant replay and the push to eliminate home-field collisions.
  • One of the players in the Cardinals clubhouse this spring is in the middle of taking a course in calculus. To find out which one, you’ll have to go read this feature on Cardinals.com.
