Day 11: Bird Seed
The workouts continue down here in Jupiter, though the countdown has begun for the start of the Grapefruit League season. The Cardinals open exhibition play on Friday (Carlos Martinez vs. Jose Fernandez) — which just so happens to be the same day the organization will put its regular season single-game tickets on sale. More details on those ticket sales can be found on cardinals.com.
The Cardinals continue to have their pitchers prepare for the start of games with live batting practice, and another five pitchers took part in it today. The group included Kevin Siegrist, who had been slowed by arm soreness early in camp. That delay has hardly been a setback. Kevin Butler, Jorge Rondon, Zach Petrick and Sam Gaviglio also threw to hitters on Sunday.
Another six pitchers threw bullpen sessions, including Jason Motte. This was a notable development for Motte, of course, because it was the first such session he’s had all spring. Though it wasn’t his first time back on the mound since arriving in Florida, it was the first time that he threw to a crouching catcher. Motte expects to repeat the activity on Tuesday and Friday. Each of these benchmarks he reaches puts him a step closer to a return from Tommy John surgery.
It was an otherwise mostly uneventful day at camp. The Cardinals expect to have an update on Jaime Garcia’s status on Monday.
