Day 13: Bird Seed

wpid-0225141126b.jpgWell, some days you just can’t quite predict. Today started off with news of Ozzie Smith’s campaign to make Opening Day a national holiday and ended with me writing about Carlos Martinez’s twitter account. In between, the injury update that was supposed to happen (Jaime Garcia) didn’t, while another injury (Trevor Rosenthal) did. All in a day’s work, I suppose.

All the while, workouts were still held at the Cardinals’ spring complex as the team inches closer to the start of Grapefruit League action. Manager Mike Matheny is expected to announce additional starters for those games on Wednesday.

While several teams have exhibition games against college baseball teams or intrasquad games scheduled for this week, the Cardinals are not including either into their schedule.

Some leftover news and notes from the day:

  • Adam Wainwright, Michael Wacha and Marco Gonzales each threw two “innings” of live batting practice on Tuesday. Rosenthal, Seth Maness and Sam Freeman each took the mound for one round of live BP. Rosenthal’s session was cut a few pitches short due to tightness in his groin.
  • The following pitchers threw bullpen sessions: Jason Motte, Jorge Rondon, Keith Butler, Sam Gaviglio, Zach Petrick, Boone Whiting and Kurt Heyer. For the latter two, it was their second time on the mound since being late additions to Major League camp.
  • Position players and pitchers were on the same field for a while working on run-downs and pickoffs. Position players also added a sliding drill into their workout rotation.
  • The beloved Willie McGee reported to camp on Tuesday and was in uniform to assist with workouts. Now a special assistant to the general manager, McGee is a regular guest instructor in spring training.
