March 2: Q of the Day
What happened to John Gast? Is he in camp with the Cardinals in Jupiter, Fla.?
— Mike B., Owensville, Mo.
Gast is not a participant in Major League Spring Training this year. Rather, he continues to rehab his left shoulder, which was surgically repaired late last July after it was determined that there was a muscle tear in the lat region. At the time, the Cardinals cited a recovery period of 8-12 months. Only seven months have passed since the procedure.
Could Gast make an impact in St. Louis in 2014? It’s possible (though I would handicap it as unlikely). Regardless, he is not going to be a factor for at least several more months. With several other young pitchers having leapfrogged Gast on the depth chart, the Cardinals also chose to remove the lefty from their 40-man roster and outright him to Triple-A in November.
