Day 21: Red Sox @ Cardinals
There will be a World Series rematch featured at Roger Dean Stadium on Wednesday — and the one pitcher who made headlines for not appearing in that series is poised to get his chance to take the mound against Boston now.
Right-hander Shelby Miller will start for St. Louis, and, like the other starting pitchers who have already made their spring debut, he’ll have a target pitch count of around 40. This will be the first of five spring starts for Miller, who projects to be in the Cardinals’ Opening Day rotation for a second straight year.
Yadier Molina is back in the Cardinals’ lineup … as a catcher. This marks the first time this spring that Molina will be behind the plate. The Cardinals intentionally used him only as a DH early so that they could reduce the wear-and-tear on his knees.
Before the scheduled 12:05 pm CT first pitch, Trevor Rosenthal will take the mound on one of the backfields to throw live batting practice. Rosenthal, who was slowed last week by a strained groin, is expected to be ready for game action once he passes this final test.
Also of note: Manager Mike Matheny gets his first trial run with baseball’s new expanded replay system. It will be in place for today’s game and both managers will be free to challenge as many calls as they’d like.
