Day 33: Cardinals @ Red Sox
The Cardinals’ bus is en route to Fort Myers for a World Series rematch, but back here in Jupiter, Fla., reliever Jason Motte just finished throwing his second live batting practice. I wasn’t here for his first session, but was told command was an issue. That wasn’t so much the case today.
Motte threw 23 pitches (by my unofficial count) to catcher Carson Kelly. Minor Leaguers Nick Longmire and Bruce Caldwell stood in as hitters. Almost all of the pitchers not making today’s trip, as well as pitching coach Derek Lilliquist, looked on from behind the batting cage.
Today’s game (first pitch: 12:05 pm CT) against Boston will be televised on ESPN. It’s the first of two ESPN games the Cardinals will play this spring.
Reliever Pat Neshek has returned to camp after spending several days at home after the birth of his son. Hoyt Robert Neshek was born on Thursday.
So happy to announce the arrival of Hoyt Robert Neshek – 3/13/14 – He’s a tough little guy! pic.twitter.com/3cFBZC4nP9

Also, as has become an annual tradition, I will be hosting a blog bracket challenge for the NCAA Tournament. It helps pass the time to Opening Day and fosters some fun competition among the readers. I will set that up later today and will post the sign-up information here on the blog. Hope you’ll join in as we all compete for a little pride (or in my case, to retrieve my pride after a dismal 2013 showing).
