Day 37: Nationals (11-10) @ Cardinals (7-10)

Aledmys Diaz will make his Grapefruit League debut on Friday as the Cardinals’ shortstop. Diaz had to return to Mexico to obtain a work visa, and with that now in hand, he has no limitations. The Cardinals are not looking at Diaz as a potential Major League roster addition right now, but this will give the big league coaching staff an opportunity to take a look at a player who could be up by the end of the season.

This will be Adam Wainwright’s fourth of five spring starts leading up to the season opener. Available to pitch behind him will be Randy Choate, Seth Maness, Sam Freeman, Pat Neshek, Trevor Rosenthal and Keith Butler.

Before today’s 12:05 p.m. CT game, Jason Motte will head out to one of the backfields to throw live batting practice. This will be his third such sessions — and perhaps the final one before he is cleared to pitch in a game (Minor League or Grapefruit League).

Jennifer,
With the mixed reviews on Diaz from his prior professional experience in a relatively weak pitching league, average glove, average speed, etc., I’m surprised you see him coming up at all this season.
Maybe in the September call ups? Outside of injuries whose roster spot would he take?
