March 24 Q of the Day

What is the significance (if any) of the red/black print of the starting lineup card that you show in your posts before each day’s game?

 — Larry W., Tulsa, Okla.

I figured this would be worth answering on here because you’re likely to see photos with red and black names throughout the season. The answer is quite simple: the players whose names are in red are left-handed hitters. It’s a visual way of seeing the left-right balance in the lineup.

(Of note: Today’s lineup photo did not show those distinctions because it was a black-and-white photocopy of the original.)
