Day 42: Nationals (14-12) @ Cardinals (10-12)

wpid-0326140923.jpgThe last time Adam Wainwright faced the Nationals (Friday), he pitched eight shutout innings on 81 pitches. He gets the opportunity for an encore again as Washington returns to Roger Dean Stadium for the final time this spring. This is also to be Wainwright’s last start before he takes the mound in Cincinnati on Opening Day.

Jhonny Peralta, one of the candidates to bat second for this club, is hitting from that spot again today. Manager Mike Matheny has been consistent in shuffling players in and out of the No. 2 hole all spring. If anything else, it at least creates some drama leading up to the season opener. Kolten Wong is another candidate to hit behind Matt Carpenter.

Jon Jay returns to the starting lineup for the third time since March 17. The Cardinals’ decision to give the bulk of recent center field playing time to Peter Bourjos further indicates that Bourjos will enter the season as the starting center fielder.

Today’s game will be televised by ESPN; first pitch is scheduled for 12:05 p.m. CT.
