April 26: Pirates (9-15) @ Cardinals (13-11)

0426141250A win today would improve the Cardinals’ record to 14-11… And despite all the underachieving on offense and defense so far, that record would still equal the one the Cardinals had through 25 games a year ago. I shouldn’t need to remind you that the team went on to win the division and National League pennant following a similarly slow start.

Just trying to offer some perspective for those of you on the borderline of panic.

To earn win No. 14, the Cardinals will have to get to lefty Francisco Liriano, which they finally were able to do back on April 5. That was after Liriano went 3-0 with a 0.75 ERA against the Cardinals last season.

He’ll be opposed by the Cardinals’ lone lefty starter, Tyler Lyons, who pitched well in his season debut earlier this week.

With Liriano on the mound, manager Mike Matheny has inserted right-handed hitters Peter Bourjos (5-for-14 vs. Liriano) and Mark Ellis (8-for-13 vs. Liriano) into the lineup.

Not panicking…..but one has to be very concerned over the lack of offense and PARTICULARLY the lack of power on this team. What is it….over 300 straight ABs now without a homer?
