April 28: Brewers (18-7) @ Cardinals (14-12)
It’s premature to call an April series big, but this is certainly an intriguing one between a Brewers team that boasts the Majors’ best record and a Cardinals club picked by most to be the best in the National League Central. Milwaukee arrived in St. Louis with a 4.5-game cushion in the division.
Though the Cardinals’ offense came to life on Sunday, the status quo was no longer good enough for general manager John Mozeliak and manager Mike Matheny. Before Sunday’s game, the two talked about making a pair of roster moves and went through with those after the game.
Kolten Wong returns to Memphis, where the Cardinals hope that regular playing time and a less-pressurized environment can help the second baseman find his swing and his confidence. Shane Robinson heads to Memphis, too, where more at-bats await him.
Randal Grichuk (wearing no. 15) and Greg Garcia (no. 12) join the big league team, each for the first time. The Cardinals don’t sound ready to give either player regular playing time, but both will get some opportunities. Playing well could lead to more. Today, the two will be available off the bench.
