May 20: D-backs (18-28) @ Cardinals (23-21)
The Cardinals will open up a series against Arizona tonight without Trevor Rosenthal available. That does not come as much of a surprise given that Rosenthal pitched four straight days leading into Monday’s off day. What is a surprise is that manager Mike Matheny admitted that Rosenthal would not be used on Tuesday. Typically, for strategy sake, Matheny won’t disclose such information until after the game.
Matheny would not say who would handle a save situation in Rosenthal’s absence, though the Cardinals could turn a few different ways. Lefty Kevin Siegrist and right-hander Carlos Martinez would be options. There’s also Jason Motte, who was activated from the disabled list today. The Cardinals’ preference would be to build Motte up in low-leverage spots first, but Matheny often turns back to what he knows — and he has seen Motte close plenty of games for him in the past.
Jon Jay is today’s lineup because he is 14-for-37 against Arizona starter Bronson Arroyo. Lefty Sam Freeman was sent back to Triple-A Memphis to make room on the roster for Motte.
