May 21: D-backs (18-29) @ Cardinals (24-21)

wpid-img_20140521_165301196.jpgThe Cardinals pulled to within 2.5 games of the Brewers with their win on Tuesday, making this the closest St. Louis has been to the division leaders in more than a month. As mediocre as the Cardinals have played this season, they are fortunate that no one in the division has taken that opening to create some separation.

The Cardinals have already ensured themselves a winning homestand, but a win tonight would also give them three winning series during the extended stay at home. Jhonny Peralta is out of the lineup tonight, mostly due to his 1-for-21 track record against Arizona starter Brandon McCarthy. The day off gave manager Mike Matheny an opportunity to get Daniel Descalso his first start since May 6.

Also, if you missed the news earlier, Shane Robinson has rejoined the Cardinals. Joey Butler was optioned to Memphis to create the necessary roster space.

Tonight’s game is available free on MLB.TV to those of you outside of the Cardinals’ regional television market.
