May 22: D-backs (18-30) @ Cardinals (25-21)

unnamedThe Cardinals enter the final game of this nine-game homestand having won six of their last seven — the only exception during that stretch being the game that got away in the ninth inning on Sunday. The club came home a .500 team and trailing Milwaukee by five games in the National League Central. They’ve since halved that deficit and sit a season-best four games above .500.

The team is, however, still looking for its first sweep of the season. It had three other chances to close out a sweep (including over the weekend against Atlanta) but couldn’t.

Mark Ellis, 10-for-23 with four home runs in his career against D-backs lefty Wade Miley, gets the start at second. Shane Robinson is in right field, as manager Mike Matheny tries to maintain some of the positive offensive traction that Robinson had down in Triple-A.

Matheny revealed today, too, that Kevin Siegrist was available out of the bullpen last night only in an emergency due to recent workload. The lefty is expected to be good to go today. Michael Wacha expects the same on Monday, when he’s scheduled to start against the Yankees. He played catch without issue today and had no lingering discomfort around his elbow, where he was hit with a foul ball last night.
