May 24: Cardinals (26-22) @ Reds (22-24)
This is the second time in three days that the Cardinals will face a lefty, and once again, manager Mike Matheny is playing to the matchup by loading his lineup with right-handed hitters — including second baseman Mark Ellis and outfielder Shane Robinson. On Thursday, Robinson parlayed a starting opportunity into a three-hit night.
Getting Robinson into the lineup comes at the expense of Matt Adams, who has not impressed against lefties this season. The Cardinals were hopeful that with regular at-bats against southpaws, Adams would have some success. To this point, he is 5-for-38 with two doubles and one RBI. If the Cardinals are losing confidence in Adams’ ability to hit lefties, that could soon signal a move to call up one of the hot-hitting Triple-A outfielders.
Jaime Garcia is making his second start and seeking his first win in a little more than a year. He is 9-2 with a 3.18 ERA in his career against the Reds.
