June 7: Cardinals (31-31) @ Blue Jays (37-24)
After serving as the team’s designated hitter on Friday, Yadier Molina is out of the Cardinals’ lineup entirely on Saturday in what manager Mike Matheny described as a mental day off. He stressed that Molina is physically fine but that the veteran catcher is “beat down with the fact that we’re not playing well.” Molina has also hit into some bad luck over the Cardinals’ recent 3-9 stretch, during which he is batting .128/.244/.154.
Matheny said he encouraged Molina to limit even his pregame work today in order to take advantage of a day away. Molina will, of course, be available off the bench, though, if needed.
Kolten Wong also remains out of the lineup as he nurses a sore left shoulder. Indications are that Wong continues to improve, but it’s not a certainty that he’ll appear in any of these games in Toronto.
You may have noticed this already last night, but pitching coach Derek Lilliquist is away from the team this series (attending a graduation), which is why bullpen coach Blaise Ilsley is in the dugout and making the mound visits. Assistant hitting coach David Bell has shifted into the bullpen to make sure everything is covered there.
While the Cardinals are trying to stall Mark Buehrle’s roll, the First-Year Player Draft will wrap up today with rounds 11-40. Again, look to MLB.com for comprehensive coverage. To read more about the eight players the Cardinals selected in Day 2 of the Draft, click here.
