June 10: Cardinals (33-31) @ Rays (24-41)
The Cardinals open a two-game series at Tropicana Field tonight with all of their regular starting position players back in the lineup. Kolten Wong returns to second base after sitting all three games in Toronto while his left shoulder healed. Matt Holliday, a game-time scratch due to lower back tightness on Sunday, will serve as the team’s designated hitter. Yadier Molina played two of the three games against the Blue Jays — but hadn’t caught since Thursday. He’s back behind the plate tonight.
The Molinas actually have a monopoly on the catching duties Tuesday, as Yadier’s older brother, Jose, is catching for Tampa Bay. This is the first time the two have played against each other since 2011, when Jose Molina was with Toronto.
If you’ve been frustrated by the underachieving Cardinals this year, just consider that the Rays — another sexy preseason postseason pick — enter the day with the worst record in baseball. The Astros, in fact, have won four more games than Tampa Bay to this point. The Rays have lost 13 of their last 14 and now sit ready to face Adam Wainwright and Michael Wacha.
