June 16: Mets (31-38) @ Cardinals (37-32)
St. Louis is coming off a sweep of the Nationals, which improved the club to 18-2 against the National League East at Busch Stadium since the start of the 2013 season. During that stretch, the Cardinals have outscored those East opponents, 89-43.
Jon Jay, who continues to produce and assert himself as the Cardinals’ primary center fielder, moves up to the No. 2 spot in the lineup as Mike Matheny looks to take advantage of his on-base percentage (.358). That, in turn, drops Kolten Wong to the eight-hole. Wong was hitless in 16 at-bats until he tripled on Sunday.
The Cardinals welcomed their top pick from the 2014 First-Year Player Draft, Luke Weaver, to Busch Stadium today for Weaver to officially sign. He signed at the recommended slot figure of $1.843 million and will report to the Gulf Coast League team on Wednesday to begin his professional career.
Tyler Lyons (left shoulder strain) threw a bullpen session today; afterward, Matheny suggested Lyons will need to make another rehab appearance before the club considers activating him. Kevin Siegrist (left forearm strain) has not yet left for his rehab assignment. He’s expected to throw one more bullpen here on Wednesday before heading out.
