June 19: Phillies (32-38) @ Cardinals (39-33)
Randy Choate was thrilled to present today’s lineup, which looks a little more robust after manager Mike Matheny used the Mets series to rest some of his regulars. The Phillies, who will be here for four games, sit six games under .500, but they have won seven of their last 10 including three straight against the Braves.
Several items of pregame news to pass along:
- Michael Wacha will not start as scheduled on Sunday. The Cardinals have chosen to skip his spot in the rotation one time through to give the right-hander some extra rest. There is no injury issue. Rather, this is something the Cardinals anticipated doing at some point this summer (and likely will again) as they monitor Wacha’s workload in his first full big-league season. Carlos Martinez, who is stretched out after spot starting for Adam Wainwright on Monday, will start in place of Wacha.
Joe Kelly threw a bullpen session today and continues to inch closer toward going out on a Minor League rehab assignment. He said he’ll likely throw one more time here at Busch Stadium and then hopes to start that rehab stint next week. The Cardinals intend to build Kelly up as a starter (even if there is no immediate rotation room for him), so he’ll need a few starts in the Minors before coming off the disabled list.
Tyler Lyons is back in Memphis, having been activated from the disabled list and then optioned to Triple-A. He will rejoin the Memphis rotation immediately.
