June 20: Phillies (33-38) @ Cardinals (39-34)
Aside from watching Yadier Molina and a few teammates shoot scenes for a music video, it’s been a rather uneventful afternoon so far at Busch Stadium. Manager Mike Matheny pushed back the player report time to 4 pm today and cancelled batting practice. He sensed the break would be welcomed by a club currently in the middle of playing 17 games in as many days.
Lefty Kevin Siegrist played catch at about 120 feet today and described his shoulder as “better” than the last time he threw. It was not absent all discomfort, but Siegrist did consider it a step forward. Siegrist was unsure when he’d be cleared to throw off the mound again.
The Cardinals face a familiar foe tonight in A.J. Burnett, who (as a Pirate) made six regular season starts and then another in the National League Division Series against the Cardinals last season. In his 2013 regular season appearances against St. Louis, Burnett went 3-1 with a 3.67 ERA. He did not, however, pitch well in Game 1 of the NLDS, which cost him the chance to come back and pitch Game 5.
