Cardinals recall Lyons; option Gonzales to Triple-A
The Cardinals recalled left-hander Tyler Lyons on Monday and created space for him on the 25-man roster by optioning lefty Marco Gonzales to Memphis, where he will pitch in the Triple-A rotation.
Gonzales made three spot starts for the Cardinals, pitching most recently in Sunday’s 8-4 loss. Gonzales allowed seven hits and walked five but limited the Marlins to one run in 4 2/3 innings in that outing. He finished five innings in only one of the three starts.
The fifth spot in the Cardinals’ rotation, which Gonzales has filled since Jaime Garcia was shut down, will come up next on Friday, when the club needs someone to start the team’s series opener against the first-place Brewers. Lyons, who has been pitching in Memphis’ rotation since coming off the disabled list last month, would be an option. The Cardinals could otherwise choose to activate Joe Kelly (left hamstring strain) from the DL and have him start.
Kelly threw 72 pitches in a rehab start for Memphis on Sunday. The Cardinals had previously said they expected to have him make one more rehab start and then return to the Majors after the All-Star break.
Lyons posted a 6.12 ERA in six appearances for the Cardinals earlier this season.
