Ellis to DL with left oblique strain; Garcia recalled

A day after manager Mike Matheny revealed that Mark Ellis was unavailable for the team’s series opener against the Reds due to soreness, the veteran infielder was placed on the disabled list with a left oblique strain.

The Cardinals announced the roster move on Tuesday, though Ellis’ DL stint can be backdated to Aug. 15. Taking his place on the 25-man roster is infielder Greg Garcia, who was hitting .275 with 40 RBIs in 103 games with Triple-A Memphis. Garcia, who was briefly on the Major League roster early in the season, batted .367 with Memphis this month.

Ellis, 37, started for the Cardinals at second base last Thursday but had not played since. Dating back to July 6, Ellis had made just four starts.

Just a thought. When Yadi comes back, who’s going to tell A.J. that he has been released?

When Yadi comes back rosters will be expanded to 40 men; we will carry 3 catchers.

Sorry to see it’s not Kozma being brought up now, but maybe he will join in September call ups.

I just noticed the opening of your “about” page is, “The 2011 season will be my fifth covering the Bucs…”
Think it’s about time for an update?
Thanks for the heads up on Ellis. I’ve had mixed feelings about him being signed this year. To begin the year, I was glad that Mo found a decent everyday second baseman, because I hadn’t been sold on Wong even a little bit. But Wong has proven himself more than capable, and seems to deserve the spot as our every day second baseman.
I wish Mark Ellis nothing but the best, and hope he’s good to go off the bench come October, but it’s been great to have a bit of consistent production out of the 2B slot.
Descalso is no slouch, either. He’s come up big many times for the Cards, and it was great to see him play such a pivotal role in the SWEEP of the Reds.

Steve, although Descalso has been a loyal guy and Ellis a proven vet,its time we get a bench with some pop to it. Heck, we need pop from the starters as well. Stanton needs to be next years target even if it means losing Tavaras.Hope Mo can make a better deal than he did for Lackey. Which has me still wondering why we didn’t get Price for Craig and Kelley, they were a better package than Tampa got from Detriot.Someone needs to explain that one to me.

Jen,you don’t to read these posts, but I’ll give it a shot. What happened to the Cards website? In the past you could connect to a chat room and read posts about the Cards. Now its gone………..do you know why?Does anyone know why?

The Cards website (cardinals.com) is still alive and well and unchanged. Not sure what you’re having issues with.

How much longer will we have to watch Justin Matherson throw,he can’t pitch a lick?Every time he throws its a crap shoot.Put Martinez in there at least he has stuff and will be a contributor.Matherson just there for now and will be gone next year.Useless pick up Mo.

Half game out of first to start the day and Matheny puts Masterson on the mound, who proceeds to crap his pants. No offense again, and people think this is a playoff contender? People please……this isn’t the year.Go get Stanton while you have the pieces to do it with and before age catches up to Waino and Yadi.

Lets also add that now you have to over use the bull pen because of Masterson. This as we head into a big series against the Bucs.Cleveland is laughing at us big time and they don’t even have a QB.
