Cards recall Lyons, option Garcia

Having asked the bullpen to cover 13 innings in their weekend series against the Phillies, the Cardinals fortified their pitching staff on Monday by adding lefty Tyler Lyons prior to the team’s series opener against Pittsburgh. The Cardinals created space for Lyons on the 25-man roster by optioning infielder Greg Garcia to Double-A.

Lyons was slated to start for Triple-A Memphis on Monday, meaning he’s plenty fresh to provide the Cardinals with innings out of the ‘pen, if an extended relief appearance is needed.  The Cardinals’ other long reliever, Nick Greenwood, threw three innings on Sunday.

Lyons has been with the Cardinals twice before this season and is 0-3 with a 5.46 ERA in seven appearances (four starts). Since being sent down in July, Lyons was 6-1 with a 3.72 ERA, 40 strikeouts and four walks in 46 innings.

By sending out Garcia, the Cardinals will enter this next series with a four-man bench and eight-man bullpen. Garcia had just been recalled by the Cardinals on Tuesday, marking his second big-league stint of the year. Garcia took two at-bats in this most recent call-up.

Shifting players back and forth to the minors sucks. If the GM would spend some of Dewits money and by some strong players for the stretch run maybe they could put together a solid team. They really have no team leader without Molina and Beltran. They need to worry about Waino, something is wrong and if Dave Duncan was still around, he would find out what the problem is. Mathenay has a long way to go to being a manager in the BIGS.

Especially when they are barely mediocre in AAA.

Stanton.

And there is reason to worry with Cardiac Rosenthall in the closers job.
