Martinez dealt to Cleveland

Jenifer Langosch/MLB.com

The Pirates have traded right-hander Joe Martinez to the Indians for cash considerations, the team announced on Tuesday.

Martinez had been designated for assignment on Dec. 22, so that a spot on the 40-man roster could be opened for free agent signee Kevin Correia. Following that roster move, Pittsburgh had 10 days to trade, release or outright Martinez to the Minors.

Martinez’s stint with the Pirates was a brief one. He was acquired along with outfielder John Bowker from the Giants for Javier Lopez at the July Trade Deadline. He spent a month pitching in Triple-A before joining the Pirates in September.

With Pittsburgh, Martinez made five appearances out of the bullpen. He was expected to provide either starting pitching depth or compete for a spot as a middle reliever.

Roster moves and invitations

The Pirates have designated right-hander Joe Martinez for assignment. This opens up the spot on the 40-man roster necessary to add Kevin Correia.

Pittsburgh also announced four more non-roster invites to Spring Training: Tyler Yates (who has signed Minor League deal), Jeff Clement, Rudy Owens and Justin Wilson.

September 5: Nationals (58-78) @ Pirates (45-90)

Right-hander Joe Martinez has been recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis and is expected to be in uniform for the game today. Martinez will pitch out of the bullpen. The Pirates acquired Martinez from the Giants (with John Bowker) on July 31.

After two relief appearances to stretch him out, Martinez made four starts (and a piggyback start) with Indianapolis. Overall, Martinez went 1-2 with a 5.72 ERA in 7 games there.

Also in team news, righty Jeff Karstens has been scratched from Monday’s start due to a sore shoulder. He may not pitch again this season. Lefty Brian Burres will start in his place against the Braves, but you have to wonder if Brad Lincoln will soon be up to fill that rotation spot for the rest of the year. Lincoln will start for Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday.

The Bucs can earn a series win with a victory on Sunday, which is not set up to feature a pitcher’s duel at PNC Park. You’ve got Jason Marquis (1-7, 8.13 ERA) going against Charlie Morton (1-10, 10.03 ERA). Let’s just say I didn’t make early evening plans.
